Reconciliation Resource: Reflect, Respect, Respond: Strengthening Culturally Responsive Practice

Creating culturally safe, welcoming learning environments is a vital part of reconciliation in education. Developed by Be You, in collaboration with a panel of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators including members of the Narragunnawali team, Reflect, Respect, Respond: Protocols for culturally respectful engagement with First Nations communities supports educators across Australia in strengthening their cultural responsiveness.
The guide offers practical information and reflective prompts on connecting with First Nations communities, developing strong family partnerships, embedding culturally responsive curriculum, and discussing sensitive topics with care. It also provides case studies, reflective questions and suggested actions to help create inclusive learning environments for all.
Wherever your school or early learning service is located—whether there are many, few or no First Nations-identifying students or staff—Reflect, Respect, Respond encourages all educators to approach cultural responsiveness with reflection, respect and integrity, always guided by local community voices.
Educators are also strongly encouraged to engage with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Capability Framework to deepen their learning and commitment.
Cultural responsiveness is an ongoing practice. When approached with purpose, it benefits everyone in your learning community.
