“Reconciliation Australia should be commended for the open approach that they have taken to the evaluation of Narragunnawali, the responsiveness to interim findings and adjustments to the program, as well as a commitment to continue to work with schools and early services to improve the lives of Indigenous students, and enable non-Indigenous students to learn about the history, culture, language and special place of Australia’s First Peoples.” - Narragunnawali Research Report 8
Across three phases since the program begain in 2015, the Australian National University Centre for Social Research and Methods (ANU-CSRM) and the Social Research Centre (SRC) partnered on an longitudinal, external evaluation of Reconciliation Australia’s Narragunnawali program.
The evaluation:
• has enabled evidence-based changes and updates to the program within and beyond the project plan
• reported program successes and challenges to stakeholders and funding partners.Previously published Narragunnawali research reports can be accessed in full by visiting the ANU Centre for Social Research & Methods website.
Drawing on these reports and wider sectoral research, AITSL published a Collaborate article reflecting on what we know and where we need to go when it comes to reconciliation in education.
In turn, and further to the evaluation learnings and recommendations to date, Reconciliation Australia is currently working with evaluation and education sector partners to devise good ways of measuring and monitoring progress against the Narragunnawali program’s renewed goals for:
• Teachers, educators and school leaders to champion reconciliation.
• Schools and early learning services to be holistically and actively committed to reconciliation.
• Education institutions to actively collaborate with local communities and broader reconciliation networks.
• The education sector to have optimal measures, resources and policy commitments to drive effective reconciliation practice. These goals and their intended outcomes are underpinned by a wider vision for education systems to actively respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, and to actively engage the hearts and minds of all future generations to contribute to the reconciliation process.

"The Narragunnawali site is such a fantastic and rich source of resources - it’s an educator’s dream!" - Teacher, June 2021
We love receiving questions, suggestions and success stories from teachers, educators and other members of educational communities across the country. The Narragunnawali program and online platform wouldn’t be what it is today without the continued feedback and ideas from the wider reconciliation in education community of practice.
