Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities maintain a special connection to Country, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures are contextualised by the local area and practices. 

Finding out as much as possible about the histories and cultures of your local area should be a priority when learning and teaching about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Local knowledge is important because of the shared connection with the particular place in which your school or early learning service operates. Exploring this connection can greatly enrich relationships, understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culture, Country and place.

This can be achieved by working with your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to talk about significant sites and events that are appropriate for students, children, educators and the school or early learning service community to learn about, visit or attend.
