Cultural Competence for Students and Children

6 schools and early learning services have added this Action to their RAP.

The development of everyday programs that provide children and students with opportunities to build their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures can make curriculum decisions more meaningful and engaging. These opportunities will also help to reduce prejudice and increase respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The focus of this RAP Action is twofold.

The first aspect is encouraging teachers and educators to engage with their own cultural competence training, and at the same time, consider how to respectfully integrate concepts and principles from that training into their everyday curriculum and programming. By teaching students and children about culturally aware behaviours and attitudes, they may be better prepared to engage with broader programming focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions.

Secondly, there are other ways in which teachers, educators, parents and community can support students and children to explore their own cultural competence. This may be done through reflective engagement with training courses, film, art, music or cultural experiences created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These cultural competence activities need to be supported by ongoing learning opportunities facilitated by teachers and educators.
