Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages

3 schools and early learning services have added this Action to their RAP.

Through learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, students and children can gain deeper knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and identities. Providing students and children with opportunities to learn – and learn about – Australia’s First Languages also plays an important role in supporting language maintenance and revitalisation.

Learning, or learning about, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages is an important step in gaining a deeper understanding of the diversity and significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, identities, cultures and contributions. These learnings also provide a unique opportunity for students and children to reflect on their own ways of being in the world, while acquiring:

• Communication skills in the language being learnt, as well as potential to enhance literacy skills in English.

• An appreciation of the role of languages in intra- and inter-cultural communication, relationship-building and identity-building.

• Stronger capacity for inter-cultural awareness, empathy and respect.

• A capability for reflection on the importance of language use, language learning and language maintenance or revitalisation.

Providing students and children with opportunities to learn – and learn about – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages can enhance their understanding and connections to the Country on which your school or service is located, and local cultural identities. The Australian Curriculum Framework for Aboriginal Languages and Torres Strait Islander Languages recognises the direct links and deep connection between languages, Country and identity.
