Reconciliation Resource – Evaluating Resources Guide

The Narragunnawali Evaluating Resources Guide helps teachers select respectful, appropriate and accurate resources when teaching about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories. This guide lists essential questions to consider to ensure resource material shows First Nations perspectives appropriately, respectfully and accurately, avoiding outdated and racist stereotypes. By using this guide, teachers can feel confident they are facilitating learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and diversity in a positive and respectful way.

The guide focuses on when the resource material was made, who was involved in its development, how it represents First Nations peoples, and how it presents imagery. Teachers are encouraged to use up to date resources that are ideally created by or in collaboration with First Nations peoples and communities, as this ensures they are more likely to be authentic, relevant and accurate. The guide also reminds teachers to check for respectful language and images and that materials show the diversity of First Nations peoples, cultures and communities rather than generalising or using stereotypes. This focus on accurate representation helps students see First Nations peoples as active, diverse individuals rather than one group with the same experiences.

This guide is a helpful tool for teachers when planning lessons, as teachers can see if a resource supports learning goals and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views. The guide is also helpful for librarians and resource officers when purchasing books and classroom resources. Teachers are also advised to check with local First Nations communities if they need clarification on a resource. This approach helps create a classroom that values Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and gives students a fairer and more respectful view of Australia’s histories and shared national identity. Using the guide also assists in creating culturally responsive learning environments where First Nations children, students, staff and families can see their identity and culture being valued in authentic and respectful ways to instil a sense of belonging to the school or service community.

For more detailed guidance, teachers and educators can refer to the full Evaluating Resources Guide. This guide, along with our Evaluating Resources professional learning resource, supports more confident lesson planning, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.
