Resources for reflecting on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (Harmony Day)

21 March marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD), a day dedicated to promoting understanding and equality. Established by the United Nations, IDERD, commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, where peaceful protesters advocating against apartheid’s “pass laws” were tragically killed.

In Australia, this date also coincides with Harmony Week, a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. While it is important to celebrate our multicultural society, it’s equally important to focus on combating racism wherever and whenever it arises.

The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has developed fact sheets and a lesson plan about IDERD to demonstrate how the idea of ‘harmony’ can sometimes obscure structural and systemic racism. These resources are designed to support conversations about keeping the focus of IDERD on ending all forms of racial discrimination and justice. The fact sheets and lesson plans are suitable for schools, workplaces, community centres and other institutions and are available in a range of languages including Arabic, Burmese, Dari, Simplified and Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese.

Engaging with these resources offers an opportunity to reflect on the impact of racism and explore ways to promote respect and quality within our communities. By observing both IDERD and Harmony week, we can celebrate our shared values and commit to building a future where all Australians are treaty with dignity and respect.

We encourage you to explore the AHRC’S International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination resources and to engage with the Anti-Racism Strategy – Evaluation and Planning, Racism in the Media, and Reflecting on Our Cultural Identities professional learning resources, and the Teach About Days of National Significance RAP Action.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and free from racial discrimination.

By using these resources, you can contribute to meaningful change and deepen your understanding of the role we all play in building a more inclusive society.
