Using optical illusions, children explore the idea that there are often multiple sides to single story — including stories that might concern them and their peers.

Given that reconciliation is a collective, collaborative journey, it is important to foster opportunities for all children to be engaged with the planning and implementation of reconciliation initiatives. This activity provides some suggested ideas for children’s engagement.

With the support of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, educators guide children to work together to create a shared artwork to display somewhere in their early learning service.

This craft-based activity reminds children of the cultural meanings and significance of the colours that make up the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag.

Through a facilitated group conversation and invitation-crafting activity, children learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their local or wider Australian community, and the value of welcoming them into their learning environments.

Educators guide children to use building blocks to construct a basic model of their local area and point out important Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community places and organisations within the area. People who can share important learnings at these places/organisations are also recognised and positively discussed.

Through an incursion or excursion, children learn about the historical and cultural significance of the Country on which their early learning service is situated, and/or of other important sites in their local area.

This activity supports children to develop an early awareness of personal or cultural differences, and a positive attitude towards difference, by celebrating what is special and unique about their individual selves.

This activity encourages children to appreciate the positive things that they can learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people every day. In this way, children can develop an early awareness of the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment in the educational context.

In this activity, children are given the opportunity to meet—directly or indirectly—members of an exemplar group or committee with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation.

This activity utilises a range of map representations to engage children in thinking about the languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia and the distinct physical and socio-cultural geographies to which they belong.

This curriculum resource is centred on directing Educators to the suite of Preschool education resources developed by ACER around the Little J & Big Cuz SBS/NITV series.

Through engaging with translations of a song into a number of different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, children will develop a shared appreciation of, and pride in, the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
